C. Michael Hawn, professor of Church Music
at Perkins School of Theology and Director of the Sacred Music Program, Southern
Methodist University, joined the faculty in the fall of 1992. Hawn holds
D.M.A, and M.C.M. degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary,
Louisville, Kentucky and a B.M.E. degree from Wheaton College.
A frequent contributor to
many journals, Dr. Hawn has published over 250 articles, books, reviews and
curriculum materials. Dr. Hawn in a student of global music, having
received several fellowships for study of music around the world including
Africa, Asia and Latin America. This research led to the publication of a
global collection Halle Halle: We Sing the World Round (Choristers Guild,
1999) and, more recently, two books on multicultural music and worship:
Gather Into One: Praying and Singing Globally (Wm B. Eerdmans, 2003) and
One Bread, One Body: Exploring Cultural Diversity in Worship (The Alban
Institute, 2003).
Dr Hawn has served Choristers
Guild as President of the Board twice and was the Interim Executive Director
2002-03. He has edited Stepping Stones (a three year, Kodaly-based
curriculum). He secured a grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian
Worship of SWAM (Summer Worship, Arts, and Music) Camps for chapters as well as
a grant for a leadership development certification institute with Madeline
Bridges, the first session of which will be offered in Louisville, Kentucky on
July 26 - 31, 2009. He has been a lifelong member of Choristers Guild.
